Brad Johnson About Peaks & Places Travel

Brad Johnson, owner and founder of Peaks & Places, has personally spent more than 28 years guiding and exploring new trekking and climbing routes in the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash mountain ranges of Peru.

In 2003 Brad authored and self-published the book Classic Climbs of the Cordillera Blanca, Peru, considered by many climbers to be the best climbing guide book to the Cordillera Blanca mountains of Peru. In 2004, using satellite imagery and GPS data, Brad also Co-published the 1:50,000 Topographical Map to the Cordillera Huayhuash. For many years this has been the best map available for that region.

Leader in Trekking and Climbing Trips in Peru

Peaks & Places is not like the other adventure companies, which offer you a hundred destinations to choose from, instead we specialize in a select number of exciting, challenging and educational journeys. Our goal is to combine adventure with an in-depth understanding of the culture you are visiting. On all of our trips you will be accompanied by our well organized, experienced trekking staff and licensed mountain and cultural guides, to ensure that you have a safe and first class adventure.

Since 1982 Peaks and Places has specialize in guided eco friendly, climbing trips in the Cordillera Blanca, climbing peaks likes Urus, Ishinca, Tocllaraju, Pisco, Chopicalqui near Huascaran and guided trekking trips around the Cordillera Huayhuash, in addition to trekking around Mt. Ausangate and climbing Mt. Ausangate. We also organize trekking trips around Mt. Salcantay and hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu near Cuzco.

In 1987, Peaks & Places was one of the first companies to begin offering the Mt. Salcantay and Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. Today that is still one of our favorite trips and we feel it is the best way to arrive at Machu Picchu by foot.

In 2005 Peaks & Places organized and led one of the first exploratory treks through the heart of the Vilcanota mountain range, east of Mt. Ausangate. Peaks & Places is one of the few companies that safely guides groups around Mt. Ausangate and to its 20,901 foot summit.

Our in depth knowledge of these mountain regions is what allows us to provide safe, well planned and well organized climbing and trekking trips every year.

Your Safety is our Biggest Concern.

Drawing on 28 years of experience, Brad Johnson has organized all of the itineraries for the trips offered. These itineraries are designed to allow you to properly acclimatize, which in turn give you the best chance of success when climbing or trekking at altitude. Most companies create itineraries to fit the 10 or 14-day vacation window most people have. Their itineraries push you too much, and do not allow your body the time it really needs to adjust to the altitude.

The Gamow Bag: Peaks & Places Travel is the ONLY company in Peru that always takes a Gamow Bag on every trip as emergency treatment for AMS (Acute Mountain Sicknes), caused by high altitude. Most companies send their clients out without any thought for the dangers of AMS. Some companies will send a bottle of oxygen with a group. This is like putting a band-aid on a gushing wound. Bottled oxygen is useless once it is all used up and the normal one bottle that may go out with a group will not last long enough to be of much use. The Gamow Bag artificially takes a sickened individual down to a much lower altitude than he is currently resting at. This drop in altitude is the only proven method for reversing the effects of AMS. Most importantly it is a re-usable source of treatment and can be used until the person recovers or during evacuation.

Iridium Satellite Phone: Peaks & Places also takes an Iridium Satellite Telephone on all our mountain trips. This is the best sat-phone to use in the southern hemisphere. When someone is injured or ill, and needs to be evacuated quickly we are able to contact emergency services to set in place any needed rescue.

Both of these safety items provide our clients with an extra margin of safety in case of the unexpected emergency.

Environmental Friendly Trips

Peaks & Places believes in protecting the environment. On all of our trekking and climbing trips we carry out all of our garbage as well as that of others we find along the way. We make extra efforts to leave our campsites cleaner than we found them. In addition we also provide pit toilets that are carefully covered after use to make the area look like there was not toilet there.

Peaks & Places has made a big effort to educate and train all of our kitchen staff, porters, and animal drivers and guides on the importance of a leave no trace environment. They all understand how easily a group of people can impact the environment, and now they make that extra effort to protect the environment.

Our Certified Guides; Informative and Educational Trips

Climbing Guides: In the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash regions all of our guides are fully certified, English speaking, IFMGA professional mountain guides. Our guides have worked with Peaks & Places many years. They all share the same values for sharing their knowledge of the region and teaching safe climbing techniques to help you become a more competent and safe climber or trekker. Our goal is to help you reach your goals and learn about the country and mountain environment that you have come to see. While we cannot control the environment or climbing conditions, our guides always make your safety the top priority. If we determine that a climbing or trekking route is not safe, we will simply stop and find another objective that we can accomplish.

Trekking Guides: All of our English speaking trekking and cultural guides are university educated and nationally licensed. Over the years of taking groups to the Cuzco region and working with many guides, we feel we have the best cultural guides in the business. Our cultural guides take great pride in their culture and the history of their ancestors and want to share their knowledge of the local customs, flora, fauna, native languages and provide an educational journey beyond your expectations.

Un-Equaled Logistics

Most international companies offering trips to Peru work with a middleman for all of their logistical support and equipment, Peaks & Places does not. We have all of our own high quality equipment for trekking and climbing stored in Peru. Large dining tents with tables and chairs, kitchen tents, large 3-person tents for 2 people to share while trekking or at base-camps, high quality Mountain Hardware mountain tents, toilet tents, comfortable mattresses to sleep on and a complete kitchen full of supplies required to cook the best meals you have ever had in the mountains. By having our own logistical equipment we are able to keep our costs lower than the competition and pass those savings on to you. We are able to manage all aspects of the trip you venture on.

Comfortable Group Sizes

From the beginning the goal for Peaks & Places has always been to provide well-organized, exciting and educational trips at affordable prices. For our climbing trips we always have a 3/1 client to guide ratio. On our trekking trips our group sizes are kept small (no more than 12 people and usually smaller) so that our guides can create a more personalized atmosphere and share with you their enthusiasm and knowledge of the regions and its indigenous cultures.

Peaks & Places does not believe in the typical advertised “small groups, no bigger than 15 people” mentality. Their underlying reason is lowered fixed costs per client and a higher profit. We believe that any group larger than 12 people is a cattle drive and damaging to the environment.
