Trip Grading Scale
Back to previous page

The trips we offer are graded according to difficulty, length of time away from civilization, and elevation reached. This enables you to compare your own outdoor experience with our trips.

Grade 1
These trips are for anyone in good heath and of all ages. There is no camping and only easy hiking. Nights are spent in hotels.

Grade 2
For the more active traveler. These trips involve moderate hiking and vehicle travel over rough terrain. Nights are spent in rustic accomodations or in hotels.

Grade 3
More demanding trips involving hiking and camping for 3 to 4 days at a time, below 15,000 feet elevation. Previous camping experience is recommended but not necessary.

Grade 4
Physically demanding trips that involve hiking (6 to 7 hours per day) up to 9 days with camping and rustic accomodations. These treks cross over passes above 15,000 feet. Populated areas are scarce. Previous camping experience is strongly recommended and participants should be in good health and physical condition.

Grade 5
For the true adventurer. We can spend between 14 to 20 days trekking, with camping each night. Hiking at altitudes up to 17,000 feet will often be strenuous, with substantial elavation gains and descents. These trips are recommended for people who are in excellent physical condition, accustomed to the rigors of extended days in the wilds with the possibility of severe weather changes. Some of these trips also include the option to climb peaks as high as 20,000 feet of moderate technical snow climbing difficulty. Previous climbing experience is necessary for the optional parts of these trips.
