Trip Description

The Cordillera Huayhuash, pronounced "why wash", is a separate range of mountains south of the Cordillera Blanca in Peru. This 18-day adventure gives you a true high Andes experience. We combine the culture of the Andean mountain people who live beneath the high-glaciated peaks with adventurous walking for 10 days beneath some of the highest mountains in Peru.

At almost every turn you come face to face with glistening, vertical walls of rock, snow and ice. Six peaks surpass 6,000 meters, the most famous being Yerupaja (21,766') second highest mountain in Peru. Other peaks include, Jirishanca (19,944'), Rondoy (19,289'), Suila Grande (20,815'), Rasac (19,742') and many more.

To help us get acclimatized, we spend the first few days of the trip making day hikes above the city of Huaraz and in the Llanganuco valley located in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca mountains. Then departing Huaraz we drive 7 hrs to the start of our trek where we camp beneath the first pass. The following 10 days involve crossing seven to eight passes, the highest being 16,700’ and making a complete 107-mile circuit around the high mountains of the Cordillera Huayhuash. Because most of our camps are between 13,000' & 14,000', the altitude gained to the passes are usually 1,500' or a little more, so the passes are not as strenuous as they may seem.

Some of our campsites will be next to beautiful mountain lakes with reflections of the spectacular glaciated peaks above. Occasionally we will walk through old villages inhabited by the Andean mountain people who still speak Quechua, the original Inca language. We will have a couple of rest days during the trek to explore above camp or just relax and take in the views.

All of our equipment will be carried by burros leaving you to carry only a daypack with camera, water bottle, and any extra clothes you may need for the day. All meals will be prepared for you by our excellent trained cook staff leaving you with extra time to enjoy the trip.

This rugged trek will leave you marveling at the beauty of these high mountains and how climbers manage to climb to their summits. Considered one of the most beautiful mountain treks in the world, the Cordillera Huayhuash trek will be one of the most dazzling you will ever make!
